Reminders & Announcements

This is the final week of the season. Please return all empty boxes to your pickup site this week. If you will be joining us next season, please hold on to this week's empty box and return it to your pickup site next spring. Next year's CSA program will start the first week of May and continue through the week before Thanksgiving. We will be accepting renewal forms from current members through December 15th. After the 15th we'll open up the registration process to folks on our wait list. If you did not receive a form last week or if you have any questions, please contact Peg at 847-548-4030 or info@sandhillorganics.com.

The Liberty Prairie Foundation will be showing the movie Dirt! The Movie on Thursday, November 18th at 7 p.m. at Prairie Crossing's Byron Colby Barn in Grayslake. Dirt! The Movie is an award-winning film that tells the story of Earth's most valuable and most underappreciated resource. Admission is free and donations are welcome.

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank from the bottom of my heart all of our CSA members who've done so much to make this another successful season. Your financial support, your kind words of encouragement and appreciation, and your participation in events like the Tomato Jubilee make our work here possible and worthwhile. I look forward to the adventures that next year will bring and to a renewed partnership with all of you. -Peg

Notes from the Farm Kitchen

Beauty Heart Radishes, also known as Watermelon radishes, are rather plain on the outside but beautiful on the inside. They got their name because of the brilliant pink color of the interior. Beauty hearts are in a class of radishes called storage radishes. They are meant to grow to a much larger size than spring radishes. When stored in a plastic bag in the refrigerator they will keep for months. I use beauty heart radishes much like traditional spring radishes. They can be peeled and grated or sliced for use on sandwiches, in salads and on crudité

We have a Sunday night tradition in our house called Simple Supper. This time of year our Simple Suppers usually consist of popcorn, cider, sliced cheese and apples. For those of you used to the microwave version, making popcorn on the stovetop is a little more work but the results are well worth the effort. Start by covering the bottom of a pot with vegetable oil. Add one layer of kernels to the bottom of the pot and cover with a lid. Place the pot over medium heat. Be sure to remove from heat as soon as the popping stops. Add salt to taste. This week's bag of popcorn will make one large pot.

Buttercup squash is similar to acorn squash. It has a sweet flavor and delicate texture. It can be stuffed, baked, boiled or microwaved for use in soups, casseroles, pumpkin pie, or as a side dish. Store in the refrigerator.
