2009: A Year to be Thankful

As we begin our preparations for the Thanksgiving holiday, Matt and I are aware of all that we have to be grateful for. This year we've been blessed with many, many beautiful crops, despite some challenging weather conditions. While the cool, wet summer delayed some of our heat-loving crops, it had a tremendous positive effect on all of our leafy greens, broccoli, cabbage, and carrots.

This year more than ever, we are thankful for the support and encouragement of our CSA members, without whom our farm would not exist. One of the highlights of the year was our Tomato Jubilee which was attended by hundreds of our members.

As much as we love being on the farm, we were grateful for the opportunity to get away every now and then. Here's a photo of the girls and me riding the barrel train at the Rock River Thresheree held in September near Edgerton, Wisconsin.

Above all, we're thankful for the health and happiness of our little ones (and I'm not talking about our hens...) From all of us at the farm, we wish you a very Happy Thanksgiving!

Notes from the Farm Kitchen

The yellow potatoes come from Brian Igl whose potato farm is located near Antigo, Wisconsin. Brian's family has been growing potatoes for three generations. They began farming organically after Brian came back from college in 1997 and urged his family to convert some of their acreage to organic production. Today the Igls grow about 60 acres of certified organic potatoes. That's a heck of a lot more than the single acre of potatoes that we grow here on our farm, but Brian's farm is still a relatively small operation when compared to the huge farms that grow most of the potatoes you'll find in the supermarket. I'm always a big fan of the Igl's Yukon Gold potatoes, but this year's crop didn't produce as well as they had hoped. This week's share contains a similar yellow-fleshed potato that turns out, in my humble opinion, to taste even better than a Yukon Gold. It is creamy and buttery--perfect for all types of applications. You can't go wrong no matter how you cook this one!
